How to make a rose garden?

I've been growing roses for 20 years and a big part of the answer depends on where you live. I live in the Midwest, where humidity and bugs in summer and cold and snow in winter cna wreak havoc on regular tea roses. So I grow what are know as "old roses", otherwise known as "rosa rugosa", which have fierce thorns and smaller flowers, but are close to the original roses, and need no babying or spraying. You simply dig a hole 5 or 6 inches in diameter bigger than the bareroot toses you buy (these are better than the ones in pots you find in many nurseries). Put in your rose bush, add a cpuple inches of water and (if you compost) some compost tea (compost and some water ina bucket), then fill in around the plant with dirt. Roses need a lot of sun and won't do very well in shady areas. Good luck!

Reply:I have 15 rose bushes. Roses are not easy, they take lots of care and dead heading (removing the dead flowers). They also get lots of diseases, like black leaf, afids and many others. You must prun your roses eaither in the fall or early spring after the threat of frost. Which ever works best in your area. Ortho has the best thing for Rose diseases. Works wonders for me.
