Rose Garden

by Lynn Anderson

album: Rose Garden (1970)

(Joe South)

I beg you pardon, I never promised you a rose garden

Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometimes

When you take you gotta give, so live and let live or let go

I beg you pardon, I never promised you a rose garden.

I could promise you things

Like big diamond rings

But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover

So you'd better think it over.

When it's sweet talking

You could make it come true

I would give you the world right now on a silver platter

But what would it matter.

So smile for a while and let's be jolly

Love shouldn't be so melancholy

Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg you pardon, I never promised you a rose garden.

--- Instrumental ---

I could sing you a tune

And promise you the moon

But if that's what it takes to hold you

I'd just as soon let you go.

But there's one thing I want you to know

You better look before you leap still water runs deep

And there won't always be someone there to pull you out

And you know what I'm talking about.

So smile for a while and let's be jolly

Love shouldn't be so melancholy

Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg you pardon, I never promised you a rose garden.

Reply:Lynn Anderson has the most noted version of it, but original honors goes to the writer Joe South
Reply:Dobie Grey did this song 1st in 1970,then it was a big hit in 1971 by Lynn Anderson.

Loretta Lynn didnt record it until 1971

In 1970, things changed for Lynn Anderson dramatically. In 1970, she debuted her next single called "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden", written by Joe South. Nobody expected that the song would become such a big hit. "Rose Garden" became Anderson's biggest hit, reaching #1 on the Country charts and #3 on the Pop charts. The song also went to reach the Adult Contemporary Charts and went on to become a hit in fifteen other countries.

Summer Rose Garden colors...help please.?

We are having our wedding on July 5th, of this year at a rose garden in Columbus Ohio. The roses at the garden are red, pink, yellow, white....all colors pretty much. But, I love the colors green and yellow....do those go well with that setting do you think? How about bright pink like Azalea color and green? Maybe some yellow in there? What color scheme would you do? Would blue looks funny? I need suggestions, as I can't seem to make up my mind!

Summer Rose Garden colors...help please.?
Well, it seems like you have a lot to work with, so you can do a lot. If you love the colors yellow and green then that is what you should go with. I think that they match the setting just fine. If you want to you can add in a little pink-it will make it a lot more colorful..

You could just choose two colors like green and yellow or pink and green--then have multi-colored roses as bouquets and centerpieces, it will match with the garden beautifully...the rest of the decor, dresses, etc. can be the two color...
Reply:What everyone is telling me is to go with what you want! If you want greens and yellows, go and speak to a florist and pick out what you want. I'm not a blue flower fan, but there are a ton of ideas online and in books at the library. I just picked up a book of wedding bouquets. If you type in wedding bouquets into yahoo, there are a ton of pics to go through or brides.com does particular colors. I am getting married in a garden too, but in the fall. I'm using reds, oranges, yellows as my bouquet colors. Remember, you also have the reception to think about and what colors will look good at it!
Reply:Well it's understandable that you can't make up your mind...you pretty much can go with anything here and it'll look good. It seems that you're leaning with a shade of pink. There are a lot of dresses out there that can be fairly neutral in color and then adding a sash brings in the color of your wedding. I personally love the chocolate brown and pink combination. What about a fusha dress with a chocolate sash or vise versa?

Remember to keep it simple. Adding too many colors will definitely throw off the look you are trying to accomplish. Pick a bold color with a neutral color and you're sure to have a winning combination.

Good luck!
Reply:i would do a bouquet of a crayon box of roses. all different colors, i would steer clear of red if it's the most bold color- unless you really want it to pop like that

but a bouqet of the blue you want and pinks, yellows, whites, creams, apricots etc...

with soft green greenery and ribbons would be beautiful

the dresses can even be different colors as well.

oh that will look so pretty

Wht can i use as a fertilizer for my rose garden?

my grandmother always used "polish tea" she filled a 5 gal bucket with water and added a couple of piles of cow poop and covered it. she would then water the base of the roses with this "tea'' once a month and she had the most beautiful roses. another cheap way to fertilize roses that I use is fish guts...yup...fish guts...lol I dig the fish pieces down into the soil close to the roots and water ....last year my roses were huge and had tons of buds....just my humble opinion.

Wht can i use as a fertilizer for my rose garden?
the finest fertilizer for roses, is no fertilizer at all, but rather an ammendment of a product called Mushroom Compost. This product is unbelievable. if you cannot get this product, earthworm castings are fantastic also.

Did Karl Rove quit so he can focus full-time on planning Jenna's wedding in the Rose Garden?

You KNOW it will scheduled right before the election in 2008, and you KNOW it will be treated by the media like the greatest event since Charles and Di got married.

Just wait and see the bounce Bush gets from THIS one.

Did Karl Rove quit so he can focus full-time on planning Jenna's wedding in the Rose Garden?
That's funny--I was just saying the same thing to a friend. It'll be 24-hour-a-day coverage just like the Reagan funeral, only prettier colors. I hope she doesn't get drunk and make a fool of herself. Ha ha.

On the other note, I think they've hired Karl and his partner Jeff Gannon to do the decor. It will be lovely in lavender.

What are your thoughts of this paragraph from our commander and chiefs speech from the rose garden?

Here's the quote in full from the White House website.

"For example, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed described the design of planned attacks of buildings inside the U.S. and how operatives were directed to carry them out.

"That is valuable information for those of us who have the responsibility to protect the American people. He told us the operatives had been instructed to ensure that the explosives went off at a high -- a point that was high enough to prevent people trapped above from escaping."

EXPLOSIVES!!!

What are your thoughts of this paragraph from our commander and chiefs speech from the rose garden?
He has brain damage from all the alcohol and drugs he consumed when he was younger. Without speech writers he is revealed as a total fool.
Reply:You asked for my thoughts. Here they are!...

Reply:I guess that was before they figured out a plane loaded with fuel makes a pretty good high altitude explosive.
Reply:he accidentally revealed that explosives were used, not jet planes, to bring the building down. scientifically it is the only plausable explanation... if the buildings fell due to random chance, they would not fall straight down as if in a vaccuum. The only thing that creates a fall pattern as was shown on 9/11 is a controlled demolition.. but from your choice of quote I believe you know this already
Reply:Definition of explosive : tending to explode : likely to erupt in or produce hostile reaction or violence.

OMG there was explosives!!!!!!!

uuuuummmmm gasoline is an explosive b/c it can explode. The gasoline was in the planes. Now do you understand? Quit trying to make something out of nothing.
Reply:I do not see your point. The statement is both factual and grammatical.

Need to repair 150 mm drip tubing that feeds my Rose garden. I have the parts need advise as how to?

Not sure what parts you have! If it is just a leak, the best quick fix is electrical tape. The secret to making that last (and it will for years) is stretching it as much as you possibly can as you cover the area that leaks. Make sure the area is dry first and wrap with tape at least 3 inches on each side of leak.

Can you visit the rose gardens in Portland in the winter?

My brother's getting married in Portland this December and I want to know if it'll be worth trying to visit the rose gardens while we're out there. The website says they're open daily, but will there be anything to see? Or should I just tell him to get married next spring?

Can you visit the rose gardens in Portland in the winter?
The Rose Garden is open every day of the year.....it's also free. But nothing will be blooming in December. The view of the city is pretty good from up there (if it's a nice day). For a really good view go to the Pittock Mansion (also in Washington Park), it is even nicer there than the Rose Garden.
Reply:you can go there, but the roses will be dead. December is cold and rainy. I don't know anyone that would get married there at that time.

Why do some angiosperms do not produce fruits, seeds as in the case of GARDEN ROSE?

(EXPLAIN WITH RESPECT TO ROSE PLANT),I DO AGREE THAT SOME DO PRODUCE FRUITS ETC,BUT ALSO TAKE THE EG:- OF LILY,JASMINE,THEY ARE ALL FRAGRANT FLOWERS WHICH DO NOT PRODUCE SEEDS.

DO TRY TO GIVE THE APT REASON FOR MY QUESTION

Why do some angiosperms do not produce fruits, seeds as in the case of GARDEN ROSE?
Quite a few garden flowers and shrubs are artificially manufactured called 'Hybrids' they are infertile producing neither seed or fruits and can only be propagated through taking cuttings also; a lot of these plants are sold on licence that they are not copied or reproduced commercially for profit or gain (very much like illegally reproducing and pirating copies of audio CDs).

There is a rose that falls in the shrub category called "Golden Celebration" that is beautiful. I saw it at a garden show, it has a wonderful citrusy fragrance.

If you could have a rose garden, would you choose old style roses or modern?

If I was only allowed to choose one or the other, I would go with a careful selection of modern roses. The reason for this would be the relative hardiness from disease and the repeat blooming nature of the modern roses, as opposed to the usual single but intense flush of flowers in the old roses. Among the modern roses are ones with many different colors, forms, and fragrances, and many of them have the charms of the old-fashioned ones.

In reality, I grow a couple of old varieties of roses along with my modern hybrids. And you could have the best of both worlds by planting the David Austin roses, which combine the beautiful and varied forms and fragrances of the old style roses with the repeat blooms of the newer varieties.

If you could have a rose garden, would you choose old style roses or modern?
I mix new with old I choose by color, number of petals %26amp; when they bloom.
Reply:Variety! Some of both but heavy on the Old fashion heirloom roses---they are not as high maintenance %26amp; are less prone to disease. Would research which ones do best with soil %26amp; growing zone for my area of the world.
Reply:amymarie,

You would do good to figure out what kind of roses appeal to you. If I were to plan a rose garden, I would choose some for fragrance, some for long stem cuttings, and some for color.

Next I would look to some of my favorites to see if they were the ones that could do the job I would have to do.

Fragrance:

Double Delight ( Red and white two-tone)

Yves Piaget ( Lavender- Purple)

Belaroma (Yellow w/ pink edges)

Long Stem Cutting:

Opening Night (Red)

Mr. Lincoln (dark Red)

Oranges %26amp; Lemons ( a floribunda!)

Bewitched (pink)

Color:

Purple Tiger (Purple %26amp; white picotee)

George Burns ( floribunda yellow and pink blend picotee)

Trumpeter ( Red/Orange floribunda)

Queen Elizabeth ( nice Pink)

St. Patrick (yellow to yellow green)

Climbers:

Eden ( Pink and probablty the best of all roses, light fragrance)

Joseph Coat (orange red and pink and orange continuous blooming a challenge)

Have fun with what you are doing. Do not crowd them. Use pots, they do fine in pots about 16" or better, to avoid crowing in the beds.
Reply:Modern style for me. They are hardy and don't need as much babying as the old style. The blooms are bigger and last longer. If you have the time and patience the old style has more character.
Reply:I have a rose garden and I have shrub roses, tea and floribunda. All look well together.
Reply:Both. Roses are very pretty. Have you ever read Gerald Durrell? When he lived in Corfu he had a very wondrous experience with his tutor's old mother. It's beautiful. But in my garden I would have a mosaic of flowers for the different painted butterflies, bees and birds. I would love to attract hummingbirds to my garden. The occasional one does flit by but I would like it to stay.
Reply:Go with what you like, old roses smell good and are vigorous, the newer varities have nice colors. try several areas dedicated to the differernt types and in thirty years you can decide what you like...
Reply:Old fashioned roses. Many of the newer ones don't even smell prettty even though they look nice.I love the old fashioned bush type roses.
Reply:I think to create a nice mix of color I'd use both styles. It would also afford me the ability to grow those types of roses that bloom nicely and provide a wonderful fragrance. You'd get the best of both worlds.
Reply:I have both.
Reply:I have the tradional rose in my garden, fromtalking to others I found that they are usually a harder plant and the blooms last longer .I do find some of the new breeds of roses quite pretty.
Reply:We have many roses in our gardens. Not sure what you mean by old style roses??

We have rose bushes, climbing roses, crawling roses. Roses are just beautifl. It is so great when my husband cuts some and brings them in to me so we can enjoy them inside too!

the Rose Garden is not in Bangkok, as the last person said it's about 25 km from down town and not much in way of hotels in that area.. Best bet is a hotel in Bangkok and take a taxi to Rose Garden.
Reply:I have used different websites booking at Thai owned places in BKK, the 5star foriegn places are western priced. 3star or 4star are well appointed, great breakfasts, usually a pool and gym, room service, etc. One company I can recommend is

I stayed at the Prince Palace, 4star, handy for me with the canal and the wholesale clothes, about $25US per day, but you should find out the area your meeting hotel is. From memory the rose gardens about 30km from BKK cntr.

This ones about $50, and very close to your meeting.

What kinds of flowering perennials can I plant in a new garden with 4 double knockout rose bushes?

I am putting in a new border garden in my yard this weekend. I have 4 double knock out roses bushes that I am putting in there--but I have allowed lots of space for the bushes to spread. I would like to add some other perennials that would complement the roses. What can you suggest? I am in Zone 5 and the location is in full sun. I would like something that does not require a lot of care--

What kinds of flowering perennials can I plant in a new garden with 4 double knockout rose bushes?
Which color? The original knockout is kind of raspberry colored. So is the pink. The blush is true pink.

A row of white alyssum in the front edge looks great with knockouts.

If you have the raspberry shades, go with blues and whites, such as blue salvia or veronica.

The new northern crape myrtle Hopi is an exact match to Blush.
Reply:Yellow Stella de Oro daylily would look great with the roses.

How to make a rose garden?

I've been growing roses for 20 years and a big part of the answer depends on where you live. I live in the Midwest, where humidity and bugs in summer and cold and snow in winter cna wreak havoc on regular tea roses. So I grow what are know as "old roses", otherwise known as "rosa rugosa", which have fierce thorns and smaller flowers, but are close to the original roses, and need no babying or spraying. You simply dig a hole 5 or 6 inches in diameter bigger than the bareroot toses you buy (these are better than the ones in pots you find in many nurseries). Put in your rose bush, add a cpuple inches of water and (if you compost) some compost tea (compost and some water ina bucket), then fill in around the plant with dirt. Roses need a lot of sun and won't do very well in shady areas. Good luck!

How to make a rose garden?
is this a joke?

-pick a spot...

-dig out all the clay

-put a rose plant in

-and cover it back up with topsoil....

-u can throw the clay to ur neighbor's yard

-fertilize it,

-and mulch it, so weeds wont grow....
Reply:I have 15 rose bushes. Roses are not easy, they take lots of care and dead heading (removing the dead flowers). They also get lots of diseases, like black leaf, afids and many others. You must prun your roses eaither in the fall or early spring after the threat of frost. Which ever works best in your area. Ortho has the best thing for Rose diseases. Works wonders for me. You should buy mature rose bushes only, I'v never heard of them planted from seed, and plant them in late spring, watering them well. For homemade remides go th jerrybaker.com. He has the best homemade recipes for all your garden needs. Good Luck!
Reply:It requires hard work and knowledge of insecticides %26amp; fertilizers otherwise flowers are less in numbers and are lean and thin .

This Question is for all you Rose Gardeners out there: I'm new at this, just started my garden this year.?

I planted David Austin roses and I'm following the instructions closely to care for them. One thing I did not see mention in his instructions with regards to trimming back the flowers for a second blush. There is new growth, spindly and tall, no flower buds on them. Do I let them grow or are they suckers? Only knowledgable people answer please, I want to grow the best rose garden this side of Halifax. Thanks fellow rose lovers.

This Question is for all you Rose Gardeners out there: I'm new at this, just started my garden this year.?
David Austin is a specific "brand" of roses from one breeder. Some of his roses grow like climbers, others like hybrid teas etc.

"Mary Rose" is one I've seen in person before and it grows like a 'grandiflora', with larger flowers in clusters.

When you remove dead flowers, cut the stem or cane, back to where the cane is the thickness of a pencil, just above a leaf. The thicker the stem, the larger the flower that will be produced. And a thick stem will support the weight of the blossom. The 5-leaflet rule is intended to get you down far enough, but don't be afraid to go further. Roses grow like crazy, and bloom like crazy too. Sometimes you can end up with 'blind' canes. That is to say, no flower develops. Treat them as you would a cane after blooming. Cut it back! After you cut the cane, apply a little 'Elmer's glue' to the end. That will prevent rose borer from entering the cane.

Several answerer's think that you might have 'suckers'. They would come up from the ground, and those, if present should be removed. It sounds more like 'blind wood' to me.

I'd also suggest a good rose fertilizer. I like 'rose tone' from Espoma. It's a nice mostly organic fertilizer applied once per month.

I hope that this helps

Good luck
Reply:Hi, suckers grow from below the bud union. That's the knob at the base of the plant, where the canes grow from. Anything above, are rose canes,so don't cut those off. Bye
Reply:The spindly growth sounds like suckers. Try to remove them below the soil level. If you remove the spent flowers ,the bush should continue to bloom most of the summer. Fertilize every 2 weeks with a rose fertilizer and spray every 2 weeks with a fungicide although I think David Austen roses are not prone to mildew. Wait for Spring to prune the bushes back 1/3 and prune where there is a 5 leaf stem . Sounds like you are enjoying gardening. It's a great pastime but the summer goes by so fast. Make sure you smell them often and take pictures to look at when the snow flies.
Reply:suckers only come from the base of the plant....

new growth needs time to harden and become strong enuff to hold up a bloom before it will bud.....

trim off each bloom as it fades, back to a set of leaves that point outward and have five or more leaves on it....

what rose ?.... are you certain it will have another flush of bloom or is it a one time bloomer?.....

right now, my roses are resting thru the heat.... my flush of new blooms will come as fall approaches and the weather cools a little..... patience!!....

Winter garden: what do I do w/ tomato, rose, and hydrangea?

I just planted a garden for the 1st time this summer %26amp; I have many rose bushes, tomatoes, and a few hydrangeas. What do I do in the winter (I'm in New York State, snow from Nov to March,)?

If I cover them w/ a bag or burlap or something (will pillowcases work?), don't they need to breathe? Do I leave it on all winter, or only when it snows or gets very chilly? Thank you very much

Winter garden: what do I do w/ tomato, rose, and hydrangea?
Tomatoes are a one year thing, once they die, you can trash them. As for the rose bushes and the hydrangea bushes, leave in the ground. They don't bloom through the winter months but they revive every spring. If you cover them with anything blocking out thier sunlight, they will die. Happy Gardening!
Reply:Tomatoes last only one year anyway (at least outside) so after the frost kills them, remove the vines and destroy them or throw them away. Your hydrangeas should be fine but it might be wise to cover them with a light mulch (new stems come up each year). The roses? Do not cut them back drastrically in the fall but remove some unsightly canes and try to get rid of the leaves that fall after a frost too. Mound your roses up to six inches with soil, then cover the whole rose bed with leaves from your yard.
Reply:I lived in Cold Spring, NY and worked at a public garden there. This is what we did with our plants:

Tomatoes- pull them out and clean up the veg garden for next year. Tomatoes will not survive the winter in Upstate NY. Best to just replant those.

Roses- We 'hilled' those. What we did was take some soil (not potting mix) and piled it at the base of the roses, about 6 inches deep. This way the roots were kept safe from a hard freeze. Definitely don't trim or prune them. We pruned the roses earlier in the year.

Hydrangea- We didn't do anything special with those. But if you wanted to cover them, cover them with reemay. That is what we used. We covered things like hellebore and other not-so-hardy plants with it. Here's a site: http://www.reemay.com/

Reemay will keep them cozy and also let them breathe.

As it got closer to winter, we would put the reemay on as needed. If we knew it was going to be very cold that night, the reemay would go on. We kept reemay on all winter. Then as the months began to get warmer, again we took it off or put it on 'as needed.' It was certainly a process since there were many plants we did this for, but we did it for the collection!!

Hope this helps!
Reply:Tomatoes will only last the season they were planted, once fall comes they will die and next year you will have to plant new tomato plants. Roses and hydrangeas will last through the winter with no problems. The roses should be trimmed back to about 6-10 inch canes or so. Make sure you don't trim them too low because some roses are grafted onto different root stock and you could destroy the above plant. If you keep the canes a little longer then you won't have to worry about this. Hydrangeas don't need any special care. If you trim them, you will be cutting off next years bud growth and you wont get any flowers. Hydrangeas are best pruned in the spring and the only thing that I prune on mine is already dead wood. I never prune them at all other than that. I mulch both my roses and hydrangeas to help protect the roots from cold temperatures and to retain moisture in the soil. I don't think this must be done for these plants, but I see it as a preventative measure that doesn't hurt and the base of my plants look more groomed. Some people cover their roses but I never cover mine and they do ok, I'm in zone 6. I hope this was helpful and enjoy your new garden as it grows!!!
Reply:All that is needed has been said already. I would just like to add this: don't remove the flower heads from the hydrangeas until after the worst of the winter is over as they help protect the plants new growth from frosts. Roses can be pruned during a mild spell once they have entered dormancy to prevent wind rock and weather damage.

multiply both sides of the equation by 2 to remove fractions

448 = 16 (20 + x)

448 = 320 + 16x

combine

16x = 128

The park is operated by the Minneapolis Parks %26amp; Rec. Here is a website (link below) with information about the park. There is no entrance fee. The peak season for viewing the park is late June to late September, but I believe the park is open year round. Anywhere I can find the name of a rose growing in my garden?

I bought if from Notcutts about 3 years ago, it had a tag on it saying it was Sophie's Perpetual, but every time I see a picture of 'Sophies Perpetual' its different to mine. Mine has almost mossy buds, darker flowers it blooms only once a year. I love the rose I have and want to find more.

Anywhere I can find the name of a rose growing in my garden?
Your best bet is to contact Notcutts and tell them of your dilemma. You can bring pictures in with you. If they didn't grow the rose themselves, they can contact the grower and try to find out the name of the rose for you. It is either truly a mistake and the cuttings were mixed and it was labeled improperly, or it is the right rose and it just looks different in your garden. Some roses behave very differently in different gardens. They will also look differently as the grow through the season.

Here is a link to Sophie's Perpetual, take a look at the "photos" and see if they are anything like yours. My mom and I both have Rosa 'Flutterbye' and they look like complete different roses and we are only 8 miles away from each other.

http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=...

Good luck!
Reply:Check with the American Rose Society---they can put you in touch with a Consulting Rosarian in your area. Your rose may be a "sport" (mutation) of Sophie's Perpetual, or the bush could have been mislabeled from the grower. Try to root some cuttings---at least you know you will have the same rose whether or not you ever find out the name...Lise from Texas
Reply:Without a picture of it posted, it is about impossible to give you a correct answer to what it is. There are many variations and types of roses. You may want to look on: roses.org as they have pictures and descriptions of most types of roses.
Reply:if the tag said that's what it is then that's what it is maybe just a different brand of Sophie's perpetual.so i would just go get another Sophie.

Can you grow a rosebush from a cut rose from my garden?

I have the best smelling rosebush I have ever smelled and want another. I do not know the name of it since it was already planted at the house I purchased many years ago. I recently transplanted the bush to my new house by following instructions I found on the internet.Since that was so successful I thought someone may be able to help me with this.

Can you grow a rosebush from a cut rose from my garden?
put the cuttings in water

when flower fades snip the cut end at a slant angle

you could dip the end in rooting hormone but not nesessary

makes a few slices in the angle cut to give room for roots to spread

put the cutting in some good dirt, water well, and cover the whole thing with a glass jar, like a canning jar, or mayo jar.

This makes a little greenhouse to keep moisture and humidity.

Leave it go for a while.....but make sre the soil stays relatively moist.

when it is hard to pull up from the ground (be careful checking) you have root!!!
Reply:yes you can go to a good garden center and pick up a tub of cutting/root powder this should help, i dont think you are suppose to take a cutting from a stem in flower, but a good solid shoot which has no bud on it, also its at its best growing time so should root well

What are the steps for transplanting a rose bush from one part of a home garden to another?

We are remodelling our house. This will entail some rose bushes being uprooted and lost, unless we properly relocate them in another part of our garden. Any tips?

What are the steps for transplanting a rose bush from one part of a home garden to another?
prune the top by atleast half,

dig it out taking as much soil as possible,

place in the new hole,

fill with water,

put in the rest of the soil from the hole

and press down firmly.

dont plant any deeper than it was in the previous hole.
Reply:Why not take a cutting.

This is how the nurseries do it and you do not risk the parent plant.
Reply:i have transplanted roses many times with success. check this out, as it will probably explain it better than i can:

http://www.geocities.com/PicketFence/225...
Reply:JUST LEAVE A GOOD ROOT BALL, ON THE ROSE BUSHES. IT SHOULD BE FINE.
Reply:Leave a big root ball and have the new hole ready for planting. If there are any flowers on the plant I would cut them off because it takes too much energy from the plant and it will need all of it's energy to recover from the shock. Give it plenty of water every day.

Can someone please tell me the entire poem of "Incident in a Rose Garden"? The long one, with a narration.

I need to know if the narrator is the master (garden owner) or someone else that isn't in the story. I'm very sure it is the master, but my all-knowing english teacher says the narrator is just a voice.

Can someone please tell me the entire poem of "Incident in a Rose Garden"? The long one, with a narration.
Incident in a Rose Garden: Donald Justice

Gardener

Sir, I encountered Death

Just now among our roses

Thin as a scythe he stood there.

I knew him by his pictures

He had on his black coat

Black gloves, and broad black hat.

I think he would have spoken,

Seeing his mouth stood open.

Big it was, with white teeth.

As soon as he beckoned, I ran.

I ran untill I found you.

Sir, I'm quitting my job.

I want to see my sons

Once more before I die.

I want to see California.

Master

Sir, you must be that stranger

Who threatened my gardener.

This is my property, sir.

I welcome only friends here.

Death

Sir, I knew your father.

And we were friends at the end.

As for your gardener,

I did not threaten him.

Old men mistake my gestures.

I only ment to ask him

To show me to his master.

I take it you are he?

"Donald Justice included “Incident in a Rose Garden” in his 1967 collection of poems, Night Light, and revised the poem for his Selected Poems, published by Atheneum, in 1979. Unlike most of Justice’s other poems, “Incident in a Rose Garden” tells a story. The three characters, the Gardener, the Master, and Death, play out a familiar scene in which Death, whom Justice describes in stereotypical fashion as adorned in black and being “thin as a scythe,” mistakes the identity of one character for another. The language is simple, yet formal, the dialogue straightforward, the theme clear: Death may come when least expected; live life with that thought in mind. Other themes addressed include the relationship of human beings to nature, self-deception, and fate versus self-creation. In its use of stock characters and situation and its obvious moral, the poem resembles a medieval allegory.

In the revised version of “Incident in a Rose Garden,” Justice moves from an objective point of view, which contains only the dialogue of the characters, to a first person point of view in which the Master relates the story. This change allows for a more detailed description of the Gardener and Death and gives the surprise ending more bite. The relationship between a consciousness of death and an appreciation of life is a theme in Wallace Stevens’s poetry, which Justice notes as a primary influence on his own writing. Justice dedicates the poem to poet Mark Strand who, like Justice, writes about the presence of death in everyday life and the ways in which the self responds to and is shaped by that presence."

"Another poem which undergoes an even greater structural modification is "Incident in a Rose Garden." The original, first published in Night Light, appeared as a strict dialogue in which three characters speak: a gardener, the master of the property, and Death. In the modified form, Justice inserted the dialogue into a fleshy sketch to supplement the bony framework of the former version. In the new narrative Death enters "dressed like a Spanish waiter," and a magnificent description of the meeting between the master and Death is appended:

Death grinned, and his eyes lit up

With the pale glow of those lanterns

That workmen carry sometimes

To light their way through the dusk.

Now with great care he slid

The glove from his right hand

And held that out in greeting,

A little cage of bone."

What I find interesting is how closely the poem resembles this:

""The Appointment in Samarra"

(as retold by W. Somerset Maugham [1933])

The speaker is Death

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."

Insects in my rose garden?

there is insects with my flowers i dont know what to get to get rid of them, they look like little green spiders. there are some other green bugs in there to. we live in ft worth tx so the weather is pretty hot here.

Insects in my rose garden?
Sounds like you are describing aphids, which are parasites that suck the life out of roses. You can purchase systemic spray that will rid the roses of them at any nursery or store such as Lowe's.
Reply:Those are aphids; they're a problem in Texas. You'll need to spray for them, and you may want to put a systemic insecticide in the ground around them as well - sort of an IV medication for plants that they can take up via the roots. Calloway's Nursery there in Fort Worth should be able to help you determine what you need.

Be sure to spray early in the morning when the wind is calm and the sun is not high yet to keep from damaging your plants. My sister lives in Fort Worth, too, so I KNOW how hot it gets there.
Reply:it sounds like u have aphids they are green and very tiny go to a garden center and ask for a rose dust insecticide.

also look for little red bugs these are mites and can suck the juice out of the plant also....act now and hope to cure the problem for next season.
Reply:They're called aphids and they suck the life out of you plant if you wanna go natural you can make a broth of chilli and garlic spray, just cut up a few hot chillies and a bulb of garlic and in a jug add boiling water let it cool then strain it into a spray bottle water it down again though and then spray your plant do this in the cool of the afternoon so you don't burn your plant. them little suckers won't like the taste and they'll go or you can just kill them with your hand Yuck though. I also heard that blue stone works too. Infuse like tea with boiling water and spray away. No more bugs
Reply:I used an organic spray for insects. The Safer brand is a good one. Products that contain Neem will kill insects and act as a fungicide. Don't spray with an oil based spray because the hot weather will cook it on the plants. If there is no natural products in your local area, Gardener's Supply ( located on the internet) is a good source. This company has lots of natural fertilizers, soil amendments, seed starting supplies, gardening tools, etc.
Reply:Those are probably not aphids - aphids are tiny, mass together, and usually come with ants. They are probably rose leaf hoppers or midges. Anyway, identifying the type of bug isn't that important, because a systemic insecticide will get rid of them all. Go to Lowes, Home Depot, or whatever home and garden store you like, and buy my favorite weapon: Bayer's 2-in-1 systemic Rose and Flower Care in the big blue bottle. It's granules of fertilizer and pesticide. You toss a few capfuls at the base of each rose bush, water your roses, and celebrate the death of the little buggers. In a week or two, you'll also start to notice new green growth, more leaves, etc. Bonus: Bayer's 2-in-1 keeps my rose bushes fertilized and pest-free for two to three months!
Reply:I'm guessing that you are talking aphids, but I wouldn't think of them as being very spidery.

Ladybird beetles work great, but they estivate in the heat and won't help you now. Remember to get and distribute some early next spring and this will cut aphid numbers down next year.

If you have the time, knock them off and squish them by hand. Aphids are soft bodied and will dry out before they can climb back up and on. The other green bugs might be predators and waterblasting the aphids will get them too. If you're sure they're not predators and/or don't care, then blast them with water.

If this doesn't suppress them, then do the systemics and poison sprays, but be careful that they don't burn your plants in the heat.
Reply:First control for all sorts of garden insects is a good spray of water to dislodge them. Repeat daily for awhile.

If these are aphids (your "spider" characterization puzzles me) they're most likely to go for nice new growth on plants that are getting too much nitrogen. If that sounds like a possibility, lay off the miracle grow and similar fertilizers.
Reply:While you can use an insecticide to get rid of aphids and similar plant-infesting pests, insecticides are not only bad for the environment, but are dangerous to pets, stray animals, and the people who live in your home.

There are, however, many environmentally-safe products to use to rid your roses of aphids and other pests. There are natural products to kill such pests, products that do not have dangerous chemical ingredients.

However, the best method of ridding your roses of aphids is by releasing live ladybugs in your garden. One ladybug can, in its lifetime, eat from 1,000 to 5,000 aphids. Ladybugs are friendly, engaging, and cute little creatures that you will enjoy having in your garden. However, when the aphids are all eaten, the ladybugs will move on, looking for new sources of food.

You can find ladybugs and other environmentally-safe pest control products here: http://www.niftygarden.com/site/361749/p...

Has a bird ever pooped on you (like Bush 2 in the Rose Garden) and have you ever been stung by wasps?

My own adventures in the Great Outdoors have included both of the events described above. Also, in the Great Smokey Mountains I outran a small bear one time, and I've seen huge rattlesnakes in the woods.

Has a bird ever pooped on you (like Bush 2 in the Rose Garden) and have you ever been stung by wasps?
Yes and the sting hurt like heck. A red wasp stung me on my head when I got too near the nest.

It happened when I was a little girl and I still remember it to this day.

Also been pooped on - the shoulder. Nice aim. The poop is white and doesn't stain. Thank God for that!
Reply:Been pooped on by my ex-husbands pet bird. It pooped in my hair as I was leaving for work and of course I did not know. My friend Rachel was so kind to tell me while we were sitting at our desks. lol Damn bird! Been stung numerous times while doing yard work. I have also seen a black bear in Colorado, in my back yard. Luckily there was a fence between us because I screamed and ran (which you are not supposed to do) like a bat out of hell, must have scared him too because he ran and never saw him again. lol Looking back it was quite funny. :)
Reply:It wasn't a bird poop. It was a cherry blossom pedel. Stop believing liberial BS!
Reply:I have experienced both as well.

When I was in the Marine Corps, it seemed that whenever we were being inspected in our dress uniforms, the birds would come out and use us for taget practice. It often happened to others, if not me. I think them birds have something against those particular uniforms, because when we wore cammies 99.9% of the time, worked outside etc... no one ever got "poop bombed"

As far as the wasps, a few times. I was a mechanic, and often people would bring in cars that were parked for a while to be repaired. A while in some cases looked like years! A few times after spending a few hours tearing apart some major part of the car... SURPRISE!!! You are being chased off by wasps. I have been stung on the hand and arms. Too bad we couldn't charge extra for the stings!
Reply:I have been pooped on twice by birds (sep. occasions). I heard (don't quote me...) that getting pooped on by a bird is good luck. I have been stung by a yellow jacket and it hurt like hell.
Reply:LOL at Bush 2. Even nature has something to say about his policies.

Been attacked by angry wasps and bird poop. Worse has happened, but funny how you remember those things so well.
Reply:Actaully, my cousins and I went to the beach. we were walking around when all of a sudden i felt somthing plop on my head. i felt my head and i was like eewwww there is somthing wet on my head. and than i went home cause' that's just nasty.
Reply:I've been hiking and backpacking loads of times, but the only time I've ever been pooped on by a bird was on the Quad at my school.

I've gotten stung by bees, but not hornets. I hate bugs and flying things %26gt;.%26lt;

Sheesh, your adventures sound much more exciting than mine! ^_^''
Reply:I had a seagull poop on my shoulder on the ferry to Catalina Island.I was so mad, everyone else was feeding them.I was just sitting way back and watching the water.Bam right on my black jacket. Then I have been stung several times by wasp in my life.My Grandpaw would take and put some snuff on it for the sting...And it worked every time....
Reply:I have never pooped on but stunned by a wasp and had a swollen jaw and eyes for the sting.
Reply:ROFL
Reply:Yes, I have had both happen to me also. The wasp stings very frequently, the bird poop only once. I would love to see the Great Smokey Mountains but skip the bear meeting. We did have a bear in the city of St. Paul that my children had the displeasure of meeting in a small wooded area just off the Mississippi River here. Thought they were pulling my leg until the media here picked it up. Never let them wander to that area again. Not that they were supposed to be there in the first place. We have garter snakes here. I think they are cute. Wouldn't care for rattle snakes of any size.
Reply:yes. i was starting to go bald and a stinking pidgeon in rochester ny decided that it needed to point it out. grrrrrr.
Reply:Yes, and yes.
Reply:no but on my dad right before a wedding reception
Reply:never had a bird poop on me. but a few weeks ago while getting gas i reached for the nozzle and there was a wasp under it. so i got stung. hurt like hell. and unfortunately, i am allergic.
Reply:Yes to both questions. Unfortunately, I had a reaction to the wasp sting that required medical attention so I steer clear of any flying insects. I go camping with grandkids as often as we can in a real wilderness area on Colorado River and see all sorts of things....we feed raccoons and possum (we know we shouldn't); marvel at fawns cavorting in trees; argue whether it is a cayman or alligator sunning itself on log, etc.

Lots of snakes, too and it was real weird to watch a hawk snatch one up from the ground not three feet away from us!!!

God Bless
Reply:yes both crap stinky and stings hurt
Reply:i have been stung a great many times. i have never been pooped on but i think that if i ever get pooped on i will stoot the bird that pooped on me!!!!!!!!!!! i have seen many huge snakes and every think else you can think of in the outdoors between me riding horse and hiking to water falls yeah i dont think that i have ever seen a bear but i dont think i want to inless i have my gun!!!!!!!
Reply:Yes, and thankfully no. The bird shat on my head, and I took it as a sign that more shatting was to be had, and it was true, I got blown off, and waited all day for that asshole who never showed up. I hope birds are all over him and his stupid car, and he gets stung daily.
